Independent Texans Endorses!
Hank Gilbert for Agriculture Commissioner

Independent Texans, which is seeking recognition for the state's 4.2 million independent voters, today announced its endorsement of Hank Gilbert for Texas Agriculture Commissioner.  Gilbert is running on the Democratic ticket against Republican Todd Staples.  Staples helped develop and pass the legislation for the Trans-Texas Corridor (TTC) and urban freeway-to-toll way schemes of Gov. Rick Perry.  Gilbert is an owner of a family run cow/calf operation in Troup and a former educator. The Dallas Mornings News said Gilbert, "is an articulate and knowledgeable rancher...(who) has plenty of ability to offer."

Linda Curtis, founder of Independent Texans said,

"Hank and I met while attending TxDOT hearings on the Trans-Texas Corridor.  I heard him talk quite frankly about who he is, and what his concerns are.  I believe Hank is truly committed to stopping the Trans-Texas Corridor – as it will dramatically and negatively impact our state's second largest industry, Texas agriculture. Most important, Hank supports the political reforms, like statewide initiative and referendum, that will give ordinary Texans the tools to clean up and open up Texas politics in the long term – after the Corridor project is put out to pasture with Rick Perry!"

"I am honored to have the Independent Texans' endorsement as the only major party candidate at the top of either ticket,” said Gilbert. “I will work hard for the people of Texas. It is time for Texans to take control of their government and make it work for them. ”

Curtis outlined the Independent Texans' endorsement process.  The candidates were required to oppose the Trans-Texas Corridor and its urban counter-part, the "double-tax" urban tollway; they had to support their "Fair Elections for Every Texan" political reform package which includes Texans' right to statewide initiative and referendum (I&R), (the right to petition for a vote of the people, enjoyed by citizens in 24 states for nearly a century), an independent citizen's redistricting commission, and fair access to the ballot for independent candidates and parties.  What's more Independent Texans asked the candidates if they would refrain from advocating for "straight ticket" voting, since the organization is supporting Carole Keeton Strayhorn, independent candidate for Governor.

Candidates being supported by Independent Texans enjoy their endorsement stamp that has an international no symbol over the word "partisan”.

“I believe in a Texas with the courage and backbone to demand workable policies—policies that reflect our pride in the blessings of a beautiful and abundant land and our commitment to preserve that land for our farmers, our families and the future,"  Gilbert said. “That is why I continue to travel the state speaking out against the Trans-Texas Corridor. We must protect our farmland and our rich history for all of the future generations.”
