| Transcript of Straight Talk with Hank on Federal and State Response to the Panhandle Wildfires
The big wildfires we had in the Panhandle a couple of months ago is an example of government neglect or lack of leadership by the Texas Commissioner of Agriculture.
Current Commissioner Susan Combs never even made the trip to go see the fire-burned area. Rick Perry waited four days - four days of it burning, and he is an ex-Ag Commissioner.
He let it burn for four days before he finally sent assistance in to help put the fires out.
He then promised those farmers federal aid. Because it destroyed barns. It destroyed homes. It destroyed fences and destroyed equipment. It killed over 25,000 head of livestock, right there on the ground. Burned them in their tracks.
And then President Bush threatened to veto the appropriations if they didn't take the $4.1 billion out in farm aid for the fires. So consequently, the farmers didn't get the money.
